Renaissance-Animated Sci Fi Thriller

Renaissance PicI netflixed Renaissance.  It was one of those suggested movies based on my previous rentals/ratings.  It looked interesting, kind of A Scanner Darkly-ish, but only in black and white.  I recommend it as a rental.  I might watch it again for the art factor.  I really like the presentation.  The plot and story could’ve been developed a little better though I think.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

Let me know what you think.  If you need to catch up hurry up and do it!

A Heroic Monday?

I slacked off last season and missed like the last 5 episodes of Heroes (gasp! I know).  So, I spent Friday and Saturday catching up.  Since NBC took them down, (I just noticed that the kitchen/dining toom in the Bleach anime is similar to the one in Lain) because they want you to buy the DVDs, I caught up at stage6.com and sidereel.com.  I was pretty excited (totally psyched actually, woot!) for the season premier.

My take on the Heroes season 2 premier:  Yay! It’s starting…eh? Ok, obviously trying to appeal to the Hiaspanic audience now that Isaac is dead…Yay Peter Petrelli! Oh, it’s over.  Meh.  That was my play by play.  I definately wasn’t overly impressed.  Probably because the last season ended so spectacularly.  In true Heroes fashion, however, I’m left with lots of questions for next Monday when I’ll definately tune in once again to have them answered.

While waiting for Heroes to start I watched Chuck.  Immediately during the first Bryce Larkin scene I was reminded of Johnny Nmemonic minus the freakin dolphin.  The “geek humor” was obviously forced.  Like the creators were thinking ‘Ok guys, we want to appeal to the geek crowd, but we want everyone else to be able to get the jokes.’  Unlike the upcomming Big Bang Theory who’s pilot makes it seem like the kind of show the every day person (and everyone else who didn’t graduate with a degree in nuclear physics) might laugh at because they know there’s suppose to be a joke somewhere in there.  There’s got to be a happy medium!  Speaking of physics, I was thoroughly unimpressed with Journeyman.  I actually couldn’t finish it.  It was like Quantum Leap if Quantum Leap had sucked.  I would actually encourage NBC to just rename Quantum Leap “Journeyman” and run it before Chuck, so people waiting for Heroes can tune in and get some entertainment from an old classic, leave it tuned in to Chuck (why not? Heroes is next anyways right?) and then finish the night off with Heroes (an actual reason to tune into NBC the next Monday ! :p ).  I’ve also heard nothing good about the Bionic Woman.  Tsk Tsk.  All my expectations let down.

I guess since Chuck didn’t totally depress me I’ll share some of the funnier quotes of Episode 1:

1. “Your 7-layer dip, tasted like 8.”

2. “Attack Troll with nasty knife.”

3. Vicky Vale Reference

4. Whole ninja stealing the computer scene!  Woot! (By the way, G4 is doing ‘Ninjafest‘ in November!  A whole night of Ninja Warrior!!!)

5. “This harddrive is ‘murdered.’” :o(

That’s all for now.

HP Fans, Geek moments, Disposal dilema

My husband works A LOT.  By A LOT I mean he has about 5 to 6 hours of time from the minute he walks in the front door until the minute he has to leave for work again.  So, along with normal laudry, dishes, cooking, shopping, and cleaning duties, I’ve learned to adapt to more stereotypically “guy” chores.  As of today I now know 2 ways to unclog the garbage disposal.  Thanks to some great search results from yahoo.  The plunger and the stick methods have both served me just fine.

The whole disposal backup issue started (this time) because we had just returned from a week vacation in Panama and I decided to clean out our fridge before re-stocking.  I’m not incredibly anal about how clean my house and fridge are, but I’m a firm believer in the idea that a messy house belonging to 2 married people is the fault of the one who’s home more.  In our house that’s me so I try to keep things decent.  Unfortunately, this time I tried to tackle the mess a little too aggressively by shoving a whole bowl of 2 week old salad down the disposal.  Woops.

I had a slightly geeky girl moment in the Panamanian airport.  You think having to stick a few 3 oz bottles in a plastic baggie is bad?  Try having to go through security 3 times before entering the plane.  But what the heck if I feel a little but safer because of it right?  While waiting in the second security line I spotted a billboard with a pink Sony notebook on it.  It had a great design across it.  So, I said “How cute!”  My mom and sister automatically start searching our vicinity for some tiny dog or cute outfit.  Finally, after clarifying that object of my delight was actually a computer, I was verbally abused by my sister.  Only in fun though.

My sister and I are Harry Potter fanatics.  We were at our local midnight premier for the Order of the Pheionix.  A little dissappointing compared to the last premier we attended.  There was not really anyone dressed up and an overabundance of kids just there to be there, not really to see the movie.  I really liked this installment into the series of movies though.  I don’t think it really matters how old the actors get.  And as we left the movie theatre parking lot, and my sister and I watched other Potter fans making their ways home, I thought it was so awesome to see so many of us.  Harry Potter fans unite!!!

Nerd vs Geek vs Dork

So what’s the diff. and does it really matter?

Until recently I was never a self-proclaimed “geek.”  I think the first person who ever referred to me in this way was a fellow pharmacy technician.  I was going to school in a small town in Idaho about 5 years ago, working at a food chain store there and a couple of co-workers got into the subject of video games; arguing over which could really be called “the classics.”   Finally, after a terribly heated discussion involving exhasperated arguments for or against a favorite game or console, one co-worker verbalized the desire to “play that again.”  Finally, I butted into the conversation timidly offering that he could just hop online to this or that certain website and download an emulator for the needed console and the rom for the desired game.  I would never have anticipated the following looks of amazement.  I was then named “fellow geek” by one of the two co-workers and given a pat on the back.

I didn’t think much of this experience until just recently when, again at work, one of my pharmacists and a fellow technician tried to explain to one of our pharmacy school interns that I was a geek, where she was a nerd.  According to these guys, any smart person can be a nerd.  But not all nerds are geeks.

Here are some nerd vs geek vs dork resources:

Hello world!

Welcome to not only my first WordPress post, but also to the birth of OneGeekyGirl.com.  This site is my place in this vast space.

And why excatly would you want to visit, bookmark, utterly fall in love with etc. my place?  Because right now, little by little, this place is  metomorphosizing (I’ve decided, as of now, this is officially a word).  Not really in a gross Kafka-esque sort of way.  More like the innocent kid to evil guy transformation in Fable or the way a level 1 undead priest in World of Warcraft emerges from the crypt smiting, canabalizing and smacking things around with a mace, and then, with time and a carpal tunnel soothing powerball , becomes a DOT wielding, beware-my-wrathing, seeped in shadow GODDESS (Well, goddess in my case. )!

So stick with me!  My main might be a shadow priest, but just because I’m not holy spec doesn’t mean I’m not watching your back.
